They're planning to bulldoze the park and build workers' flats. But I've read that in the local paper since I came here.

Sound familiar? The words are spoken by Finn, a young man in Angela Carter's wonderful novel The Magic Toyshop. The book was published in 1967 and Angela Carter had worked for a time on the Croydon Advertiser. I write about the book in the latest issue and, if you have a spare hour, there's more written about the future of the park, 42 years later, here.

Frankly it's enough to make you want to grow a beard and live in a cave.
