DO WE WANT A ROOFTOP RESTAURANT IN CRYSTAL PALACE?

An 'artists impression' of the proposed rooftop restaurant in Crystal Palace. NB We don't think it would actually be quite so 'bubbly', this one looks a bit silly.

We like to keep an eye on how Crystal Palace Triangle is shaping up on the development front, so for our latest issue we caught up with the architects and project manager for the proposed transformation of the land right in the heart of the Triangle, between Victory Place and Carberry Road, by St Aidans Group.

The lads and lasses were very upbeat when we met them for a coffee in La Bruschetta, full of enthusiasm after an unexpectedly positive 'pre-app' meeting with a whole posse of planners in Croydon who were 'cautiously supportive [of the project] subject to the detailed planning application'. Now obviously that wouldn't sound very positive if it were the answer you got from the love of your life in response to a marriage proposal, but I am told that in local authority planning speak this counts as enthusiasm.

It seems that the Croydon planners are shaking their heads and mumbling a bit about the proposal for a rooftop restaurant with potentially panoramic views across London. Apparently the problem is the height - although it might seem to those of us unschooled in the niceties of architectural design that height would be exactly what one wanted for panoramic views across London.

To be honest, we quite fancy the idea of knocking back a pina colada whilst gawping out across the night sky at the glittering lights of London.

What do you think about having a rooftop restaurant in Crystal Palace? Croydon planners don't seem very keen, maybe you aren't either? Tell us what you think -

  2. An excellent idea and one that been a long time coming. If there's one thing CP has over everyone else it's the amazing views and we need to make the most of our best feature!

  3. I can’t work out Croydon planners.

They seem to want to take out all the exciting and good bits out of this scheme and leave us with another dull flats above shops scheme the same as the Post Office.

Who wouldn’t want a bar/restaurant that actually showcased one of the finest views of London. Seems completely daft Croydon would deny this just because its slightly taller than anything else. Are they worried it will detract from the delightful 80’s shopping centre across the road. They also put the kaboosh on a potential cinema here because it would make the building a bit bulkier. They don’t seem to have a clue.

The developer has done themselves no favours either. All well and good letting you promote the scheme but if they actually asked the public for views then they might have some evidence for Croydon to say no one has a problem with the only exciting part of the scheme.

  4. Totally agree with all comments. The idea of someone, somewhere in Crystal Palace making the most of our natural height advantage and opening a bar or whatever with a view, has rumbled round the Triangle for years. People stop in their tracks to gaze at the sliver of a view from Westow Hill down Woodland Road. A rooftop whatever would unquestionably be A Good Thing - but for some reason,in CP, all good things do not come to those who wait. As Morrissey and John Lewis say, please , please let us get what we want - Lord knows it would be the first time.

  5. Transmmitter have a word with the developers to pull their finger out and speak to the people.
They might find they support the proposals and tell Croydon’s planners to stop being so blooming petty.

  6. Hello Transmitter. I have been saying to everyone I come across isn't it a shame that there is no where in Crystal Palace you can sit and have a coffee and enjoy the amazing views... and now here is an opportunity being potentially scuppered by "town planners" who would rather make a dull scheme than go out and build something with vision and adventurous. Not only that, it is what many people seem to also want!
